Google Ads MCP guide

Audit Google Ads in ChatGPT before changing it

A reliable Google Ads audit in ChatGPT starts with one account, two completed periods and a named conversion. Adrails supplies the account figures and structure through MCP. ChatGPT helps organize the investigation; the figures still come from the account, with their dates.

Audit sequence

Four reads before any advertising proposal

The order protects the review from a wrong account, mismatched dates or an unverified conversion definition.

01

Set the audit contract before opening ChatGPT

Choose one account, one level to inspect and two completed periods of equal length. Record the account ID, time zone, currency, conversion action and attribution setting. A comparison without those details can join partial days or unlike events and still sound plausible.

The first pass needs read access only. Connect Google Ads to the intended Adrails workspace, then add the Adrails MCP server to the AI client. If the account is not connected, use the free CSV audit instead of guessing from screenshots or copied totals.

  • Use completed dates, not a partial current day
  • Keep the two windows equal and non-overlapping
  • Name the selected conversion before using CPA or ROAS
  • Keep platform-attributed revenue separate from reconciled business revenue

02

Read the account and two periods exactly

Ask ChatGPT to list the Google Ads accounts available in the workspace. Select the returned account ID and request a campaign-level performance_period read with exact dates, compared with another completed range. Request spend, results, revenue when available, ROAS, CPA, impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC and CPM, with the account currency and time zone.

Read the answer as a comparison, not a diagnosis. Spend up and CPA up establishes a movement. It does not establish that bidding, a creative, audience quality or an auction caused it. If results are leads, call the metric cost per lead.

03

Inspect structure and source history

Use campaigns_structure after the performance read. It returns the latest synced campaign type, status, budget, bidding, keywords, ads and final URLs. Use that structure to ask focused questions about budget changes, keyword expansion, final URLs or overlapping campaigns.

Then check Google Ads change history for the affected scope. A change can explain what to inspect, but it does not prove causality. Keep the time of the change beside the reporting window, and ask the account owner to explain a setting whose reason is missing.

04

Reconcile the assistant answer with the source

Open the same account and dates in Google Ads before calling the review complete. Compare account identity, totals, conversion action and reporting freshness. Recent conversions can arrive after a click, so a short window may be incomplete. A discrepancy is a finding to resolve, not a reason to choose the number that supports an intended action.

The free Google Ads audit reads a Campaigns, Keywords or Search terms CSV locally and preserves the review as a downloadable report. Use it when an account cannot be connected or an external reviewer needs the same checklist.

05

Prepare a change only when the evidence supports one

A complete audit can end with no change. Write the finding, evidence, unknowns, owner and next review date before deciding whether a change is justified.

When a budget, status or campaign edit is appropriate, Adrails prepares the exact proposal from verified account state. An owner or admin reviews it in Adrails before anything reaches Google Ads. New campaign builds are created paused, and budget moves are capped per change.

Illustrative review

Describe the change without inventing its cause

One campaign, one currency and two completed seven-day periods. The figures are synthetic and are not a benchmark or a customer result.

Describe the change without inventing its cause
MetricEarlier periodLater periodWhat it establishes
Spend$1,000$1,150Spend increased by $150
Conversions2520The selected conversion count fell by 5
CPA$40$57.50Cost per selected conversion increased
Impressions40,00039,500Reach did not explain the full movement alone

CPA is spend divided by the reported conversion count. Verify the action before calling it a cost per purchase.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT audit a Google Ads account?

Yes, when an Adrails workspace has access to the intended Google Ads account and ChatGPT can use the Adrails MCP server. Start with read tools, exact dates and the conversion definition. ChatGPT organizes the investigation; it does not replace the source report.

Can I run the audit without connecting Google Ads?

Use the free Google Ads CSV audit instead. It processes a Campaigns, Keywords or Search terms export locally in the browser and does not connect to or change a Google Ads account.

Are two seven-day periods always enough?

No. Use periods that fit the conversion delay and the decision. Two completed, equal-length periods make a comparison possible, but a recent lead or purchase can still arrive after the reporting window.

Can ChatGPT change the budget after the audit?

No change is applied from the audit answer. Adrails prepares a supported budget, status or campaign proposal from the verified account state, and an owner or admin applies it in Adrails after review.
