Automation choices
Google Ads scripts vs MCP and AI agents: what to use
Use Google Ads scripts for a known procedure you can express and test in JavaScript. Use an MCP connection when an assistant needs account tools for an interactive investigation. Use an agent workflow when reasoning and scheduled execution belong together. The choice depends on who owns the logic, credentials, review and failure handling.

Decision guide
Choose by the work
| Need | A useful starting point | What you still own |
|---|---|---|
| Same calculation on a schedule | Google Ads script | Code, permissions, logs and failure handling |
| Ask follow-up questions across account data | Assistant with MCP tools | Account scope, evidence and decisions |
| Recurring multi-step reporting or monitoring | Configured agent or automation | Trigger, limits, recipients and review |
| A new budget or campaign change | A supported write workflow | Approval, before/after check and rollback |
These approaches can coexist. MCP is a protocol, not a scheduler or a guarantee that a server is read-only.
01
Start with the task that repeats
A script works well when the procedure is stable: read specified accounts, calculate a metric and produce the same report each week. Google provides a JavaScript environment that can query and manage Google Ads, including manager-account workflows. Someone still needs to test the code and maintain it as business rules change.
An assistant is useful when the next question depends on the last answer. A marketer might notice a CPA increase, ask which campaigns changed, then inspect conversion definitions or campaign structure. MCP exposes the tools for that investigation. It does not decide which conclusion is sound, how often the work should run or who can authorize a change.
02
A worked budget review using either approach
Suppose a campaign has a $3,040 monthly plan and has spent $1,400 after ten complete days in a 30-day planning period. Straight-line expected spend is $1,013.33, so actual spend is about 138% of that plan. That calculation is an operating reference, separate from Google's 30.4-day billing convention. A promotion concentrated in the first week may explain the difference.
A script can compute that variance for every selected campaign using a fixed report definition. An MCP investigation can ask for account performance and structure, then compare campaign trends before deciding whether the variance needs action. In Adrails, accounts_list identifies the account, performance_period reads an exact period, and campaigns_structure supplies the synced structure. State the dates, currency and data freshness in both versions.
The first output should be a review: what changed, which campaign explains it and what remains unknown. The arithmetic alone does not justify cutting a profitable campaign. Check the promotion schedule, conversion delay and business constraints before preparing any budget change.
03
Keep analysis separate from execution
Read access is enough for the first investigation. An MCP server can expose writes, and an assistant can make an incorrect tool choice. Check the specific server's permissions and how it authorizes writes; MCP alone does not supply those controls.
Adrails' campaigns_change_budget prepares a proposal for review in Adrails. Its documented Google Ads budget operation refuses shared campaign budgets and limits a single change to 30%. Other servers can behave differently. Scripts can also write when authorized; review the code and use preview where supported before scheduling a mutation. Preview is not a substitute for reviewing external side effects such as email or third-party requests.
04
Decide who maintains the workflow
Choose an owner before choosing a tool. Record the account list, conversion definition, schedule, destination, failure alert and stop condition. For a script, keep the source and a known-good report. For an assistant, keep the prompt, returned evidence and the exact proposal that was accepted. For an automation, keep its configured limits and run history.
A sensible hybrid is a scheduled report for stable calculations and an MCP session for exceptions. Move an investigation into recurring automation only after its inputs, decisions and review steps are repeatable. None of these approaches removes the need to reconcile provider data or review an unexpected result.

FAQ
Common questions
Does MCP replace Google Ads scripts?
No. Scripts express a programmed procedure. MCP lets a client call tools on a server. A team can keep scripts for scheduled calculations and use MCP for interactive investigation.
Can an MCP server change a Google Ads account?
It depends on the tools and permissions of that server. Adrails separates read access from preparing advertising proposals, and applies a proposal only after explicit confirmation in Adrails.
Which option is better for a weekly client report?
Use the simplest workflow that can reproduce the same account scope, dates and metric definitions. A script or configured automation can handle recurring extraction; an assistant can investigate exceptions and help draft the explanation.
