Google Ads guide
How much do Google Ads cost in 2026?
Google Ads has no price list either: an auction prices each click from your bid, your ad quality and the competition for that search. In LocaliQ's 2026 report the average Search cost per click is $5.42, the average CTR 6.64%, the conversion rate 8.18% and the cost per lead $66.69, with industries from $1.63 to $9.87 a click. This guide shows the figures by industry and campaign type with their sources, explains how the auction sets them, and turns them into a first budget with Google's own daily and monthly spending rules.

CPC, CTR, conversion rate and cost per lead from LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, produced with WordStream from thousands of Google Ads and Microsoft Ads accounts, updated 1 June 2026. The monthly budget is cost per lead multiplied by 30, rounded to the nearest $10; 30 conversions in a month is the evaluation window Google Ads Help gives for Smart Bidding.
01
How the auction prices a click
How much do Google Ads cost? Google's answer is an auction run for every search. Google Ads Help defines Ad Rank as the set of values that decide whether your ad shows and where, calculated from your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page at auction time, the Ad Rank thresholds, the competitiveness of the auction, the context of the search such as location, device and time, and the expected effect of your assets and formats. Google adds that an advertiser with a lower bid can still win a higher position at a lower price with highly relevant keywords and ads.
The price is then set by the competitor below you, not by your bid. Google's definition of actual CPC says you pay only what is minimally required to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the competitor immediately below you, which is why you are often charged less, sometimes much less, than your maximum CPC, and only the reserve price when nobody below you qualifies.
Quality Score, the 1 to 10 figure per keyword, is not an input to that auction. Google calls it a diagnostic tool built from expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, each rated above average, average or below average. It tells you which of the three the auction-time quality signals are likely penalizing, and that is how to read it: a below-average landing page experience is a reason your clicks cost more than the industry figure.
02
Google Ads cost per click by industry
LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, produced with WordStream from thousands of Google Ads and Microsoft Ads accounts, put the average cost per click across industries at $5.42, the average CTR at 6.64%, the average conversion rate at 8.18% and the average cost per lead at $66.69. The 2025 edition, as Birch's May 2026 cost breakdown reports it, had a $5.26 CPC, a 6.66% CTR and a 7.52% conversion rate, so clicks cost about 3% more in 2026 while more of them convert. LocaliQ notes that cost per lead fell across industries for the first time in five years.
CPC by industry runs from $1.63 in arts and entertainment to $9.87 for attorneys and legal services, with home improvement at $8.33 and dentists at $8.00. The click price follows the value of the customer: a law firm can pay $131.63 a lead because one case covers hundreds of them. Conversion rate decides the rest of the table. Finance and insurance buys clicks at $3.39 but converts 2.64% of them, so its lead costs $74.44, while automotive repair converts 15.51% of $4.35 clicks into $29.96 leads.
The last column of the lead table is ours, not LocaliQ's: cost per lead times 30, the number of conversions Google Ads Help asks you to accumulate before judging a Smart Bidding strategy. It is the smallest monthly budget at which the industry average would produce a readable result, from $810 in arts and entertainment to $3,950 in legal, and $2,000 across industries.
03
Search against Performance Max and Shopping
Few sources measure Search, Shopping and Performance Max on the same accounts. Smarter Ecommerce's Market Observer does, on about 650 million euros of European ecommerce spend: as of 28 September 2026 its median CPC is 0.43 euros for Search, 0.41 for Performance Max and 0.36 for Shopping. Its Q1 2026 report shows why the click prices sit so close while the campaigns behave so differently: Search CTR ran 13.5% to 15% against 1.6% to 1.8% for Shopping and 1.5% to 1.6% for Performance Max, and Search converted about 4.5% of clicks against 3.0% to 3.5% for the other two.
Those euro figures are an order of magnitude below LocaliQ's $5.42, and the gap is the sample, not the platform: product searches for a retailer's catalog clear at a fraction of what a legal or home-services keyword costs in the United States. Compare your own Shopping CPC with the Smarter Ecommerce range and your Search CPC with your industry row, never one with the other.
Performance Max reaches YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign, and Google decides the split. Optmyzr's October 2024 study of 9,199 accounts and 24,702 campaigns found that 82% of advertisers ran Performance Max alongside other campaign types, and that Search campaigns had the most obvious wins over Performance Max when both ran in the same account, with Shopping close behind. A first Google Ads budget therefore goes to Search for the terms you know convert, or to Shopping for a catalog, with Performance Max added once there is conversion data for it to learn from.

How to set a first Google Ads budget
Google Ads budgets are set per campaign as an average daily budget. Google Ads Help explains that on any one day a campaign can spend up to twice that amount to follow traffic, and that in a calendar month you are never charged more than 30.4 times the average daily budget, 30.4 being 365 days divided by 12 months. For a campaign started mid-month the monthly limit counts only the days it ran. So the monthly Google Ads budget is the daily figure times 30.4, and a $66 average daily budget caps the month at about $2,006.
Size the first budget from the signal you need, not from a share of revenue. Google Ads Help recommends judging a Smart Bidding strategy over a period with at least 30 conversions, such as a month, or 50 for Target ROAS, and says the learning period usually lasts one to two conversion cycles. Thirty conversions a month at LocaliQ's 2026 average cost per lead of $66.69 is about $2,000 a month, or an average daily budget of about $66; at that budget the industry averages predict 369 clicks at $5.42 and 30 leads at 8.18%. Replace the averages with your industry row, then with your own account's figures as soon as it has any.
People search for a Google Ads minimum budget, and Google's budget help pages name none: you choose the average daily budget. The practical minimum is the budget that buys one conversion a day in your industry, because below it a campaign cannot leave learning in a month and every reading is noise. If that is more than the business can fund, narrow the campaign to its highest-intent keywords and one location rather than spreading a small budget across many.
- Daily spending limit: 2 × average daily budget
- Monthly spending limit: 30.4 × average daily budget
- First budget: at least 30 × target cost per lead per month
- Daily budget for that: about one target cost per lead a day
05
What a Google Ads budget buys, step by step
A budget turns into leads through two rates. Clicks are the budget divided by CPC; leads are clicks times conversion rate. On the 2026 all-industry averages, $2,000 buys 369 clicks at $5.42 and, at 8.18%, 30 leads at $66.69 each. On the legal row the same $2,000 buys 203 clicks at $9.87 and, at a 5.55% conversion rate, about 11 leads. The budget did not change; what a lead is worth did.
Run the chain for your industry before launch and write the three figures down: expected clicks, expected leads, expected cost per lead. After the first month, the comparison of each against its forecast tells you which term is off. Fewer clicks than forecast at the same spend is a CPC problem, which points at Ad Rank and the quality signals. The forecast clicks with fewer leads is a conversion problem, which points at the landing page and the search terms you paid for.
The target CPA calculator on this site runs the same chain from a budget, an order target, a conversion rate and an order value, and returns the cost per acquisition, the cost per click and the click volume the plan needs, so a Google Ads budget can be checked against a goal before the campaign exists.
06
When to stop, and what to change first
Do not judge a campaign before 30 conversions or a month, whichever comes later, because Google's own evaluation window is that long and the learning period inside it runs one to two conversion cycles. Stop earlier only for a measurement fault: a conversion action that fires on every page view, or auto-tagging switched off so nothing lands in the account. The free Google Ads audit on this site starts with those checks for that reason.
After the window, change one thing at a time in the order the auction works. Search terms first: every click on a query that cannot convert is a lead you paid for and did not get, and negative keywords are the cheapest fix in the account. Quality Score components second: a below-average landing page experience or ad relevance rating names the page or the ad group to rewrite. Bid strategy and target third, once conversions are counted correctly and the traffic is the traffic you want.
Stop a campaign, rather than fix it, when cost per lead after those changes still sits above what a lead is worth to the business. That ceiling is break-even CPA, the order value or customer value multiplied by the contribution margin, and the target CPA guide works it out. An industry average that is twice your ceiling is not a bidding problem; it says the offer or the sales process has to change before Google Ads can pay back.
- Measurement: primary conversion actions and auto-tagging
- Search terms and negative keywords
- Quality Score components, per ad group
- Bid strategy and target, once the first three hold
07
Read Google Ads cost against revenue, not against the average
The benchmark answers one question: is my click price in the range of my industry. It cannot answer whether the campaign pays, because it does not know what a lead or an order is worth to you, and it does not know what your other channels cost for the same result. Those two comparisons need your revenue data next to your spend, for the same dates, in one place.
In Adrails, Analysis shows each ad account with campaigns, spend, revenue, ROAS and results, and sets what the ad platforms report next to what Shopify or Triple Whale recorded for the same period, one row per source. Meta and Google Ads items can be compared together over the same dates, and the Analysis Expert answers scoped questions about the figures with the connected sources behind them. New Google Ads connections open once Google finishes verifying Adrails; connect Meta now, and bring Google Ads in when your workspace can.
Search, Shopping and Performance Max
Google Ads cost by campaign type, where a source measures it
Only one open source measures the three campaign types on the same accounts, and it is European ecommerce in euros. The US all-industry Search row is there for scale, not for a like-for-like comparison.
| Campaign type | Median CPC | CTR | Conversion rate | Source and period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search, European ecommerce | €0.43 | 13.5% to 15% | About 4.5% | Smarter Ecommerce, September 2026 CPC, Q1 2026 rates |
| Performance Max, European ecommerce | €0.41 | 1.5% to 1.6% | 3.0% to 3.5% | Smarter Ecommerce, September 2026 CPC, Q1 2026 rates |
| Shopping, European ecommerce | €0.36 | 1.6% to 1.8% | 3.0% to 3.5% | Smarter Ecommerce, September 2026 CPC, Q1 2026 rates |
| Search, United States, all industries | $5.42 | 6.64% | 8.18% | LocaliQ, 2026, average rather than median |

FAQ
Common questions
How much do Google Ads cost per month?
What you set: the monthly charge is capped at 30.4 times your average daily budget. A budget sized to produce the 30 conversions Google recommends for judging Smart Bidding is about $2,000 a month at LocaliQ's 2026 average cost per lead of $66.69, and far less in industries with cheaper leads.
What is the average cost per click on Google Ads?
$5.42 across industries for Search in LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks, from $1.63 in arts and entertainment to $9.87 for attorneys and legal services. European ecommerce Shopping and Performance Max clicks clear far lower, at a median of 0.36 and 0.41 euros in Smarter Ecommerce's September 2026 data.
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?
Google's budget help pages set none: you choose the average daily budget. The practical floor is about one target cost per lead a day, so that the campaign reaches 30 conversions in a month and can be judged.
How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?
Start from the cost per lead of your industry row times 30 for the first month, concentrated on the highest-intent keywords and one location. Then compare cost per lead with what a lead is worth and raise or cut from there, rather than from a percentage of revenue.
Why is my Google Ads CPC higher than the industry average?
Because actual CPC is set by the competitor below you and your own quality signals, not by the average. Check the Quality Score components for a below-average rating, the search terms report for queries you should exclude, and your location and device mix against the sample the benchmark measured.
Does Google charge more than my daily budget?
On a single day a campaign can spend up to twice the average daily budget, but across a month you are not charged more than 30.4 times it. If served costs exceed those limits, Google Ads Help says you never pay above them.
