For law firms

Law firm advertising: case inquiries measured to the signed case

Adrails gives law firms and the agencies running their ads one workspace where every campaign is read as consultations booked and cases signed, not clicks. The firm's intake system sends both events from the server, Adrails credits them to the campaign and sends them back to Meta Ads and, once your workspace can connect it, Google Ads, a cost per lead alert watches each practice area, and each office or ad account gets a read-only report link.

By practice area

The conversion that matters, the figure to watch and the Adrails workflow

A click on a legal query costs the same whether it signs a case or not. Each practice area has its own conversion worth paying for, its own delay between inquiry and signature, and a workflow that starts from both.

01

Law firm advertising is bought in clicks and judged in signed cases

Law firm advertising is the most expensive search advertising there is. In LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, attorneys and legal services pay $9.87 a click, the highest of the industries listed, against $5.42 across industries; they convert 5.55% of clicks into leads against 8.18%, and pay $131.63 a lead against $66.69. Google Ads reports the click and the form its tag saw; Meta reports the lead its form collected. Neither knows whether the inquiry became a consultation, or the consultation a signed case.

That gap is where law firm marketing budgets go wrong. A campaign that fills the intake queue with inquiries nobody can sign looks good on cost per lead and bad on the firm's books, and the ad platforms keep buying more of it, because the form fill is the only conversion they were taught. Adrails is built around the two events a firm can record and the platforms cannot: the consultation booked and the case signed.

Each practice area's campaigns are read as results and cost per result in Campaigns and Analysis, side by side across offices and ad accounts, with the figures Meta and Google Ads report next to what the firm's own events recorded over the same period. Lawyer advertising on Meta Ads is read the same way, and Google Ads joins once your workspace can connect it.

  • Meta Ads and, once your workspace can connect it, Google Ads
  • Results and cost per result per campaign, practice area and office
  • Two conversions recorded by the firm: consultation booked, case signed

02

Record the consultation and the signed case, then send both back

Put the Adrails script on the firm's site and each visit is credited to the campaign and ad that brought it: the visitor id lives in a first-party cookie for a year, the UTM parameters and click ids for 90 days. When intake books a consultation, the firm's server or intake system sends a lead event signed with the server key, with the person's email or phone, the visitor id, and the fbc, fbp or gclid saved with the visit. Adrails records it against the visit and forwards it to Meta's Conversions API as Lead, with the email and phone hashed with SHA-256 and the event_id that lets Meta count it once with the pixel.

When the case signs, send a second event, purchase, with the retainer or the expected fee as value and the matter id as event_id. Meta receives it as Purchase. Google Ads counts the one event you chose for its conversion action, Lead or Purchase, so the firm decides whether Google's bidding learns from consultations or from signed cases. Conversions reach Google in batches once an hour, once the event is at least 6 hours old and carries a gclid, and the signed conversions of the last 7 days are sent when Google is set up after the tracker was already running.

Two limits protect the platforms from a leaked key or a broken intake integration: a largest value per event, 100,000 by default and adjustable up to 1,000,000,000, and 5,000 events a day per platform. A fee above the value limit is held back whole, not lowered to the limit, so raise it before the first large matter signs. Settings > Tracking shows sent, waiting and refused events over the last 30 days, and the last problem Google reported.

  • Only events signed with the server key reach Meta and Google Ads
  • lead maps to Meta's Lead and purchase to Purchase; Google counts the one event you chose
  • An event_id already recorded is accepted, not recorded again and never sent twice

03

Practice areas as campaign groups, each with its own cost per lead line

Group campaigns by practice area and office, because the click price and the signature rate differ by practice area more than by anything else. LocaliQ's Legal Search Advertising Benchmarks for 2024, from 256 US search campaigns, put cost per lead at $159.17 for accidents and personal injury law, $103.54 for family law and $72.24 for estate and probate law, on clicks of $9.30, $7.69 and $7.92. One blended cost per lead across a firm hides a personal injury campaign twice as expensive as the estate planning campaign next to it.

Give each practice area its own threshold automation. A CPA alert watches cost per result on its campaigns over today, the last 7 days or the last 30 days, is checked every hour, and fires at most once a day for each campaign that crosses its line, to Slack, Discord or email. Set the line from the formulas at the bottom of this page, with the practice area's own signature rate, rather than from the industry average. A workspace runs up to five threshold automations at once; a scheduled Weekly review with a Filter step covers the practice areas that spend less.

Stop-loss and Spend without results pause what spends without a lead: applied at once after Adrails checks on the platform that nothing changed since it was read, or left waiting in Priorities on Home for 24 hours until an administrator applies it, up to 50 items a run, every pause logged with the figures behind it. Save the campaign, ad set and ad settings of the practice area that works as a template and apply it to the next office; account-tied fields, the pixel, the Page, media and audiences, are left out, and everything created is paused until you switch it on.

  • A CPA alert per practice area, checked every hour, once a day per campaign at most
  • Templates per channel and level, the pixel and the Page left out
  • Compare two to four offices' campaigns: a verdict at 95% confidence once each has 10 conversions

04

Facebook ads for law firms: the second channel, read on the same events

Facebook ads for law firms reach people who are not searching yet, and the click is cheap. In LocaliQ's 2026 Facebook Advertising Benchmarks, attorneys and legal services pay $0.69 a click on the traffic objective at a 1.77% click-through rate, against $0.60 and 1.93% across industries; on the leads objective the report's average cost per lead is $27.39 across the 14 industries it lists, and legal is not one of them. A cheap click only matters if the inquiry it brings can be signed, which is why the consultation and the signed case go back to Meta as well.

In Adrails, a Meta Leads campaign is built in the editor with the firm's Page, its pixel and the Lead conversion event, checked by Meta before it is sent and created paused. The lead your intake sends carries the fbc and fbp saved with the visit, so Meta's bidding learns from booked consultations rather than from clicks on the ad, and the signed case follows as Purchase. Legal lead generation on Meta is then read in Analysis next to the Search campaigns, as results and cost per result over the same period.

Before any ad goes live, check your state bar's advertising rules and keep the copy and the landing page within them. Adrails does not check copy against those rules; it records what the campaign produced.

05

A report link per office, sent every week

A partner wants their practice area's figures, an office manager wants their office's, and neither wants an Adrails login. A client report is a read-only page over the ad accounts you tick, for a period of at most 92 days: spend, results, cost per result and ROAS per currency, the best and weakest campaigns and creatives, up to five of each, the changes applied in Adrails over the period and the open recommendations. Nothing internal goes in: no reasoning, no conversation, no member names. A report covers accounts, so an office or practice area that needs its own report runs in its own ad account.

Create it from Analysis with Share report, choose 30 days, 90 days or until revoked, and copy the link once, because Adrails keeps only a fingerprint of it. The Weekly client report automation emails a fresh link to up to 10 addresses on the day and hour you choose, with an agent's read of the week if you add that step; the agent step only reads. Every link is listed under Shared report links with how many times it was opened, and a revoked link tells whoever kept it that the report is not available.

Owners and administrators apply changes and share links; every member can ask the agent and read every page. The Activity tab keeps who applied a pause or a budget change, and the budget recommendations prepared from the last two complete weeks, keep, raise, cut or investigate, are proposals applied in one click, each capped at 30%.

  • Figures fixed when the link is created; the page never reads the platforms again
  • Up to 100 open links per workspace; revoke one before sharing another
  • Not indexed by search engines, no chat, no analytics on the page

The cost per lead line per practice area

From cost per inquiry to the line a practice area can hold

The alert line is not the industry average. It is what the practice area can pay for an inquiry, given what a signed case brings in and how many inquiries it takes to sign one.

Cost per inquiry

ad spend ÷ consultations booked

LocaliQ's 2026 Search benchmarks put it at $131.63 for attorneys and legal services. Your own figure comes from the lead events your intake system sends.

Cost per signed case

cost per inquiry × inquiries per signed case

At $131.63 an inquiry and one signature in five, a signed case costs $658.15 in ads; at one signature in ten, $1,316.30.

Cost per lead line

acquisition budget per signed case ÷ inquiries per signed case

A practice area that accepts, say, $1,000 of a case's fee for acquisition and signs one inquiry in five sets its CPA alert at $200 an inquiry.

The $131.63 is LocaliQ's 2026 Search cost per lead for attorneys and legal services. The signature rates and the acquisition budget are inputs the firm supplies; the ones shown are illustrations of the arithmetic, not benchmarks.

FAQ

Common questions

Can Adrails send a signed case back to Google Ads and Meta as a conversion?

Yes, when your server or intake system sends it signed with the server key: a purchase event with the fee as value reaches Meta as Purchase right after it is recorded, and Google Ads in hourly batches once it is 6 hours old and carries the gclid saved with the visit. Google counts the one event you chose for the conversion action, Lead or Purchase, and Google Ads opens once Google finishes verifying Adrails.

How do I set a different cost per lead limit for each practice area?

Make one threshold automation for each practice area's campaigns, each with its own value over today, the last 7 days or the last 30 days; it is checked every hour and fires at most once a day per campaign. Up to five threshold automations run at once, and a scheduled Weekly review with a Filter step covers the rest.

Does Adrails run Local Services Ads for lawyers?

No. Local Services Ads are priced per valid lead and ranked on bid and profile quality, a separate product from the Search, Display, Demand Gen and Performance Max campaigns Adrails builds through the Google Ads API. Our PPC for lawyers guide sets the two side by side.

What do Facebook ads for law firms cost?

In LocaliQ's 2026 Facebook Advertising Benchmarks, attorneys and legal services pay $0.69 a click on the traffic objective at a 1.77% click-through rate; the report lists no legal row for the leads objective, where its average cost per lead is $27.39. The figure that matters is your own cost per consultation, from the events your intake sends.

Can a partner see only their office's report without an Adrails account?

Yes. A client report covers only the ad accounts you tick, over at most 92 days, and anyone with the link reads it without an account; revoke it at any time from Automations. Within a shared account it shows the whole account, so an office that needs its own report runs its own ad account.
